Artist Statement

Molly Lavender Dudfield

Molly Lavender Dudfield (b.2002, Warwickshire, United Kingdom) is a multidisciplinary artist. In the past, Dudfield’s practice primarily consisted of painting, working both digitally and physically. She  occasionally explored more three dimensional type work, incorporating elements of delicate small scale sculptures. Such as with the Almond Blossom installation, where she recreated the dreamy landscapes of Mallorca’s blossom in the spring. However, as of recent she has expanded her practice, for her latest exhibition at Slades Park, she focused on creating a large scale sculpture of an ‘unusable bench’. She focuses on making socially engaged art, in this recent project bringing light to anti homeless and hostile architecture in an unexpected way. Furthermore she explores the concept of functionality in design, or lack thereof, to bring a revolutionary interaction with everyday objects. Dudfield makes artwork aimed to create a bridge in the division of people, both in respect to peers, as well as the division between humans and nature. A key concern when creating her artwork is the experience of the viewer and how she can use artwork to interact with the viewer’s perception of space, either through creating an environment using paintings or by using sculptural forms to interact with a pre-existing site.

Having been raised in Mallorca, Spain, from the age of five, Dudfield’s art is often heavily influenced by the free spirited culture and lifestyle surrounding the island. She made a series of paintings exploring hybrid creatures inspired by the island’s landscape and fauna, including ‘Jellyladies’, ethereal creatures that are half women half jellyfish; as well as a series exploring Mallorquin mountain goat skulls with purple amethyst horns. She works in a variety of styles, ranging from rather expressive, abstract designs to more controlled realistic works. In her work you can often see a contrast in organic and geometric shapes that reminisce on the division between the urban and natural environments. However her work often presents a dreamlike quality, often exploring the unexpected. Dudfield’s practice is constantly developing and evolving, she is often experimenting with new materials, striving to work in a way that is both innovative yet environmentally conscious.
